Cisco Certification

As one of the biggest and best-established names in the IT field, Cisco has long dominated the lists of hopeful job-seekers and IT professionals just entering the employment pool. For most of these achievers, the first step to landing a job with the California-based IT giant is gaining some sort of Cisco certification.

The first question that should cross your mind: what type of Cisco career certification do you want? There are five levels that you can test for: Entry, Associate, Professional, Expert, and Specialist. In addition to varying levels, there are also seven different paths available depending on what your intended specialty is: Routing and Switching, Design, Network Security, Service Provider, Storage Networking, Voice, and Wireless.

As the names suggest, each level of certification tests is of a more advanced level than the previous. Entry-level Cisco certification tests for a basic, broad knowledge of network system troubleshooting. Beginning with the next step up, the Associate level, test-takers can choose to branch out and specialize in areas such as design, security, or wireless. Professional and Expert certifications are each more complex than the last. The Expert-level Cisco certification is, in fact, considered to be one of the most difficult certifications to attain in the world. To balance out that level of difficulty, those who obtain it are almost among the highest-paid in the IT industry. The Specialist-level Cisco certification is a little different from the other levels, in that its main tenet is to test knowledge in a very focused area, rather than more general expertise. Those who choose to take the Specialist tests often do so in order to enhance their resumes and prepare for very specific jobs.
