Computer Programming Careers
There are so many computer programming careers available; the possibilities are endless. This field is one of the fastest growing and is expected to continue growing at a rapid rate between 2008 and 2018. The reason for this is simple. Technology is becoming more and more advanced and computer programmers are the ones responsible for speaking the computer language. They are the interpreters between the common layman and the inner workings of the computer.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of a person in a computer programming career will vary depending on the company or agency of choice but will consist of general computer work all day. Computer programmers are likely to work individually rather than in a team, and may be given specific tasks or very general ones. Computer programmers are usually separated into two categories: applications engineers and systems engineers. The applications engineers usually work on general programming depending on the company or client needs. They’ll write, rewrite and test all the workings of a computer program. A systems engineer is usually responsible for assessing the computer needs of each department, ordering computer parts, and setting up internet, intranet, and networking computers together.
Computer programmers tell the computer what to do, and how to do it. Writing a computer program could take hours, or it could take years depending on the complexity of the program. Sometimes a computer programmer will simple re-write or tweak what is already there. Other times, they will create entirely new programs. A computer programmer must continually design, test, design, test, design and test again.
Work Environment
The work environment of a computer programmer is generally clean, cool, and well lit. Most companies see to it that their computer programmers have ergonomically appropriate desks, chairs, keyboards etc… and as technology continues to advance, more programmers will be able to work from home or telecommute. Injuries are rare but eye strain, back troubles and carpel tunnel syndrome may be among the discomforts and risks of the job. As a computer programmer, a person could expect a typical 40 hour work week although sometimes more, and will generally be needed when people are working on their computers.
Education and Training
The necessary training and education required for a computer programmer is focused on experience. However, some companies will require as little as a high school diploma, while other companies or agencies may require a Masters degree in computer programming. It is critical in this field that the computer programmer remains up to date on the latest technological advances. Receiving certification and degrees in the computer programmer careers is sure to give the recipient the competitive edge and advantage over those not certified.

The opportunity for advancement for a computer programmer is very good. Employees doing excellent work have the chance to excel to lead programmer where they’ll be given supervisory responsibilities. Business skills and training in addition to training in the computer programming career will offer even more opportunity in the job field as it can qualify the person to system designers, independent consultants, project managers or chief information officer.
Job Outlook
The job outlook in a computer programmer career is very good. It is projected to increase more than the average career and many new jobs in the field are expected to open. As long as computers are part of the day to day experiences, computer programmers are going to remain in high demand.
